May is Mental Health Month! Mental Health Month was established in 1949 to raise awareness of mental health conditions and to promote mental wellness for all.

The American Psychiatric Association reports that factors that reduce stigma include increased openness about personal experiences with mental illness, more mental health information being available online and public figures and celebrities talking about their experiences with mental illnesses. Still, there is work to be done to fight stigma and promote awareness. Visit our website to learn more about mental illness and how you can get more involved!

Esperanza Article: The Ripple Effect

When one person in a relationship is dealing with depression, it often affects their partner. An online excerpt from the Esperanza article "The Ripple Effect" states that "research published in BMC Public Health in August 2010 found that spouses of those with mental illnesses, including depression, were more apt to exhibit signs of anxiety and depression themselves." The article excerpt also includes tips for keeping your mental health balanced if your partner or spouse is dealing with depression.

When a loved one struggles with a mental illness, it's important for family members to be informed and supported. For information, support and advocacy resources, visit NAMI Southwestern Pennsylvania's website or call the office at (412) 366-3788.
